Manchester City are set to welcome back captain Vincent Kompany from injury this Saturday when they face Sunderland.

The influential Belgium international has been on the sidelines with a hamstring strain he picked up in the Europa League against Sporting Lisbon, and has missed four matches for the Etihad Stadium outfit.

With Joleon Lescott injured also City have been forced to play Micah Richards in the heart of their defence alongside Kolo Toure, but Kompany is hopeful that he can return this weekend.

“Just had my second training session with the team. If all goes to plan I will be available for the Sunderland game,” he commented on Twitter.

“Last 8 games of the season, I hope the fans are ready to be as loud as they have ever been and we’ll make sure to be at our best.”

During the central defender’s absence Roberto Mancini’s men have relinquished their lead at the top of the Premier League and been eliminated from Europe.
